Caves at Elephanta Island

Our last stop in Mumbai was this UNESCO heritage site, featuring some incredible carvings, a 45-minute boat ride from the Gate of India. We always seem to make these adventures when the locals do (like when we went to see the reclining Buddha in Bangkok on the most auspicious day of the year and had to fight our way through mobs of good-luck-seeking Thais). On this day, it was just a holiday, but throngs of locals chose to head out of the city to the island for picnicking (and to likely avoid the closed streets for the Mumbai marathon, also happening that day).
